Grades Matter

Class Rank & The Top 10%

Texas law guarantees automatic admission to any state public university for students who graduate in the top 10% of their class. Your rank is built one semester at a time — and it starts freshman year.

⚠️
Freshman year counts permanently

Every semester grade becomes part of your GPA and rank calculation. A bad 9th grade year is almost impossible to fully recover from — your class of 500+ students is all competing at the same time.

📊
How rank is calculated at WHS

Weighted GPA — AP and dual credit courses count more. A "B" in AP outranks an "A" in a standard course. Rank is recalculated every semester and reported to colleges.

Why this connects to everything else
Dual Credit
College grades go on your permanent WC transcript. An "A" in dual credit boosts both your HS rank AND your college GPA before you even graduate.
Scholarships
Most institutional scholarships — including full rides at many TX schools — require top 10% or top 25% class rank. Rank is the filter before they even look at your essay.
GRIT / CTE Pathways
GRIT is competitive. Applications are reviewed. Strong grades show you're ready for college-level coursework starting in 9th grade.
WC Nursing ADN
Competitive points-based admission. Cumulative GPA ≥ 2.5, no course below a C. Science courses must be within 5 years. Every grade in A&P counts.
The bottom line
You can't un-take 9th grade. The students who end up with full rides and Associate's Degrees at graduation started protecting their rank on the first day of high school.

Get Started — 10 Steps

Follow these steps in order. This is how you cross the graduation stage with two diplomas.
